Drinkonomics: The Aviation

Hey there all you bitters fans, we’ve got a killer cocktail recipe for you, but first we want to extend a giant THANK YOU to all of those who made it out to THE BEACH at the National Building Museum and helped us win a friendly competition against our Union Kitchen compadres, Element [Shrub] and Wild Roots Apothecary! There were some great cocktails flowing, but we’re glad that our Hibiscus Caipirinha featuring Lyon Distilling Co. White Rum won the hearts of the crowd with its vibrant hue and top-notch sip-ability.

Come Chill with Embitterment

Speaking of awesome cocktail events, we’ll be hanging out with our friends at Salt & Sundry on Friday, August 7th from 5:00-7:00pm at their Union Market location to talk about some bitters and sample an awesome cocktail with the good people of D.C.

What cocktail?

Glad you asked. It’s our take on the classic Aviation Cocktail, featuring Embitterment Lavender Bitters!

The Lavender Aviation: A True Crowd Pleaser

Today we’re featuring a classic recipe with a floral kick, courtesy of Embitterment Lavender Bitters. This incredible cocktail consists of:

  • 2 oz Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin (750ml = $23.00)
  • 1/2 oz Luxardo maraschino liqueur (750ml = $35.00)
  • 1/2 oz fresh squeezed lemon juice ($1.00/ oz) – This is assuming you get 1 oz per/lemon, which is about right.
  • 3 dashes Embitterment Lavender Bitters (50ml = $15.00)

To enjoy, combine all ingredients in a shaker, shake until your arm is tired, and then strain into a martini or coupé glass and garnish with a maraschino cherry.Aviation Cocktail

The Drinkonomics

Now we’ll take you through the cost breakdown for this delicious, summery drink:

  • 750ml = 25.3oz (we’ll round down to 25) to be conservative.

Gin Cost: 25 oz / 2 (number of ounces/drink) = 12.5 drinks/bottle

  • $23.00/12.5 = $1.85/drink for gin

Maraschino Cost: 25oz / .5 = 50 drinks/bottle

  • $35.00 / 50 = $0.70 / drink for maraschino liqueur

Lemon Juice Cost: Assuming a lemon costs a dollar, you get 2 drinks/lemon at $0.50 each. This cost will fluctuate, but we think it’s pretty accurate.

Bitters Cost: 50ml bitters = roughly 100 cocktails.

  • $15.00 / 100 = $0.15 / drink for bitters.

Add $1.85 + $0.70 + $0.50 + $0.15 and you get a whopping $3.20 / Aviation. Try finding one that cheap and delicious at the bar.

KEEP IN MIND: By keeping your eyes out for good prices on gin, maraschino Liqueur, and lemons, you can further whittle down the cost-per-drink.

Why the Lavender Aviation Rocks

What’s great about this particular recipe is that it will please pretty much any palette. Like sweet things? Awesome. The Luxardo will keep you coming back for sip after sip. Enjoy a tart, refreshing drink? Cool. Gin and lemon juice to the rescue! We’re certain that this recipe will please and intrigue your guests, and it will always be a quick, easy trick to have up your sleeve if an unexpected gathering crops up.

Until next time: Stay Thirsty, Stay Bitter.
